About the desk

About Stallwright

Stallwright is an independent reference desk for measures. It explains weights, volumes, lengths and temperature scales in plain language, and it gives the exact definitions behind each figure.

Who it is for

  • Stallholders who weigh, count and pack produce, and want to know exactly what a label means.
  • Makers who measure by weight or by volume, from small-batch soap and candles to home brewing.
  • Cooks who scale a recipe up or down and need a figure they can trust at the bench.
  • Students and curious readers who want the reasons behind the units they use every day.

How we write

  • Plain before clever

A note should make sense on the first reading, by someone standing at a bench with a scale in one hand.

  • Exact where exact

When a definition is exact, we say so and give the full value. We do not round a definition to make it look tidier.

  • Shown work

Each conversion names its factor or formula, so a figure can be checked by hand.

  • Honest limits

We say when a question belongs to a certified body, a professional or a regulator, and we do not guess.

How figures are checked

Each factor on the converter comes from a definition. Some are international agreements, such as the 1959 agreement that fixed the yard and the pound in terms of the metre and the kilogram. Others are the metric prefixes or the US customary system. Where a definition is exact, the page states it as exact.

The converter calculates with full precision and shows results to six significant figures. The display may round a long decimal, but the arithmetic does not, so a rounded figure never feeds the next step.

What the desk does not do

  • It does not give personal financial, legal or medical advice.
  • It does not predict prices, markets or the value of any product.
  • It does not calibrate, certify or repair scales and instruments.
  • The converter runs in your browser and sends nothing to a server.

Questions and corrections are welcome. Write to the desk at hello@sat-market.com, or read the contact page for what to include.
